Jungle Love
"At eleven o'clock this morning, I was standing at the edge of a rain forest with my eyes closed." (p. 6)

This novel consists of fourteen chapters and is about a tour group of young tourists in Belize. The main characters are two young women sharing the same hotel room, Jennifer Wilson and Lisa Casey. Each chapter is narrated by either Jennifer or Lisa alternately, so that readers can can get a more in-depth look at the story.

Jennifer is unsociable and the type of person who loves nature and travelling off the beat track, while Lisa loves at the center of everyone's attention and is always complaining about something and also hates being in the tour because only Jennifer is single in the tour group. Lisa is actually attracted to one of the tour group members, Ian. He goes out with Caroline, who is also in the tour, but Ian tells only Jennifer that Caroline is not his wife. They are having an argument during the trip and not getting along well.

About Jennifer, she has a fiancé, Pete, but she is not always a good girl and describes her engagement as complicated. When a local man, Ocean, asks her out to go swimming together, she does not say yes or go with him but she is thinking she may be persuaded next time he asks her out just because Ocean is so handsome. When she goes to a bar, she finds Ian on his own without Caroline and lets him vent his emotions about his life. She also bumps into Ocean again and they go somewhere together. After her "flirting", karma is catching up with her and the story is to be continued...

From my point of view, the of the funniest scenes in the story is when Jennifer is reading and not listening to Lisa in their hotel room and Lisa gets really annoyed. Lisa zips wallets shut and open again and again to let off steam and annoy Jennifer back with those zipping noises. It sure drives Jennifer nuts and after asking Lisa if she is admiring Jennifer's plastic wallet, she goes read her book on the balcony.

See which character you will identify with, Jennifer or Lisa. If you like love stories with a happy ending, you will like Jungle Love. Enjoy.

Johnson, Margaret. (2003). Jungle Love. However, Frank doesn't like a computer or use it, so Mel surprisingly buys a state-of-the-art one for Frank. It is equipped with artificial intelligence and very useful. It makes Frank's typing easier, but there is going to be a lot of problems... The ending of this story is really unexpected, so read it!
The main character John made a robot. It understands what people say, and it was a wonderful invention. But the main purpose of the invention was just for John to become famous and make much money. The robot, Nolan did every chore that John was supposed to do, and he was really satisfied with the life with Alan. Alan realized that he himself can control the apartment but he cannot control dogs. John had a dog, Sam, but that's why Alan hated Sam. Alan envied Sam because John took Sam wherever he went, but Alan had to stay home and do chores. Alan was so smart that he had a lot of discontent with his lifestyle. One day, Alan noticed that Sam loved cookies, so he killed Sam by luring Sam with cookies near the window. After Sam's death, John cried and cried. But Alan never did and said "I must stop you. I can't die. You must die." to John. And then, Alan locked him in the bathroom and neglected him for five days. The end of this story was very scary...
Therefore, they decided to change their plan and started to go to Paris. Unfortunately, on the way to Paris, a bird strike happened. The airplane struck〔 hit〕lots of birds. As a result, they crashed into a land. They were all alive, but there were no food, no villages, no wood, no people, so he made a decision to go to the coast to call for help and find someone who could help them. He kept walking without consciousness, and then he collapsed. However, a boy in a village noticed him lying on the sand, and fortunately, he was helped by some villagers.
I will pick up on one of the stories. The principle character is called Jason, whose mother lives with him but father left their house 12 years ago. One day, he was looking at some old photos while listening music before going to a reggae band with his girlfriend, Maria, and then his mother came into his room to ask him whether he did homework or not. When he looked at the photo of his birthday party which was held before his father ran away from home, both of them were reminded of his father, Simon. Neither of Jason and his mother didn't hear from him for 12 years. However, last week, there was a phone call from Simon, and he seemed to want to meet her and Jason, but she said to Simon 'No'. Actually, Jason was going to an art school next autumn, and Maria was fine about that, but his mother was not. After he went round to Maria's, there was a call from Maria, and she answered it. However, her voice was a bit strange, which made Jason's mother hope nothing was wrong. After that, Maria saw Jason, but she told him a surprising fact. The fact will make you astonished greatly.
"Harry Potter!" said the creature in a high-pitched voice Harry was sure would carry down the stairs. "So long has Doccy wanted to meet you, sir. . . Such an honor it is. . . ." (p. 12)
Harry was not able to go to <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because Mr. Dudley trapped Harry in Dudley's house and did not let Harry go to the school. Yet, with the help of Ron and his twin brothers, he managed to get out. After that, Harry and Ron had found a way out of some difficulties and arrived at Hogwarts by magic car, but they didin't know a lot of strange things were about to happen over and over. If I told the whole story, I would have to write a lengthy passage, so if you want to read this book, I will recommend!

It took a long time for me to finish reading this one. I made good use of the winter holidays and some free time of mine to do that. Actually, I have watched the movie based on this story about 3 times, so understanding the outline was not so difficult. By the time I graduate from university, I would like to watch the movies of Harry Potter series in English, and read these books of course in English too.
Some high school students are in a rebellious phase as I used to be. The main character, Jack is going through a rebellious phase, and then he doesn't do his homework, listen to his teachers, or follow school regulations. Furthermore, he stole two cans of spray paint and sprayed a picture <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">with them in the wall at school. In the end, he was scoled by the headmaster. Like this, he had been a bad student. However, something has made him reformed. What's the "something"?

When I was a high school student, I used to skip classes and my club activities, ditch school once in a while. Actually, I have sympathized with him to some degree, but now, I realize the importance of studying, so I do not do such a thing from now on.

This book is in the Ready-To-Read series. It has made me want to play in the snow. In Kumamoto, we rarely have snow even in winter, but in Montana, they have much snow in winter. Actually, I'm going to Billings, Montana next month in an ESL program of MSUB. Therefore, I will be able to enjoy playing winter sports. Can't wait!
It is September 19, 1991, a bright, sunny day.

This story is about Ice Mummy, which had beeb deeply frozen in the thick ice when a hiker found it.
The discovery made the people all over the world talk about the frozen mummy. T<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">he police wanted Dr. Henn, a medical examiner to figure out what had happened to the mummy in the past, and then he agreed to solve the problem. First, he took it to the medical school where he works. Second, he put it in a cold room to prevent it from rotting. Third, not he but Dr. Kinrad, an archaeologist examined some pieces of equipment of the mummy. As a result, the surprising fact about Ice Mummy came to light...

The reason I picked up this one is that I was amazed to know the fact Ice Mummy truly exists in this world. The story and the photos of the Mummy made me a little scared, but this book made me think that I would like to visit a museum that displays mummies or something mysterious.
When the men were escaping from prison with a baloon, they including the boy and the dog were blown off by a strong wind. And then, they landed at an island, but many mysterious things happened to them there. I will tell you some of them. Firstly, Cyrus Smith, one of the prisoners, seemed to have been saved by someone in the uninhabited island. He fell into the sea when they were carried away by the strong wind. Secondly, when they wrote down what they wanted for survival on a piece of paper, one box suddenly appeared. Inside it, there was all what they had wanted. They were amazed, but thanks to the help by someone, they managed to survive for a long time. Thirdly, a letter was sent by the unknown rescuer. After that... the most surprising fact became clear.

The reason why I picked up this book is that I'm really interested in living in a desert island. Actually, I have been dreaming of going and living there since I was a schoolchild. After reading this book, I wondered what I would bring <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">if I could take just one thing to a desert island. In this one, you can learn mainly about American history and the environment.

I will tell you one historic event. First, about The War of Independence. Thirteen colonies along the east coast of North America was all governed by Britain, and the people of the colonies became angry at the high taxes that the goverment made them pay. As a result, as you know, an event called "Boston Tea Party" happened. After that, in 1755, a war between America and Britain broke out. In the severe war, some countries came in on the American's side, and in the end Britain lost.

Actually, when I took a American Politics course in the first semester, I studied about American history too. However, there are some pictures of the history in this book, so I have got a better understanding about it. For me, the most surprising fact in it is that Thanksgiving Day comes from "The Pilgrim Fathers". If you want to know about it, please read this book.

This book consists of 8 chapters, which describe the life of Gandhi. Let me introduce about this book.

In chapter 1, his early life is described. Surprisingly, he came from an ordinary Hindu home and lived an ordinary life.

In chapter 2, about his unpardonable insult. In 1893, he went to South Africa which was under British rule, and when he was on a train in first class, a policeman threw him off the train just because he was a person of color. However, this insult made him determined to help the Indians and stay in South Africa to fight.

In chapter 3, about Hindus. There were many kinds of Hindus in India. However, not all Hindsu were the same. There were different classes. In the highest class were the holy men. On the contrary, at the bottom were "Untouchables", who did the dirty jobs. Nevetheless, Gandhi invited a family of Untouchables to the ashram.

In chapter 4, about failure in his nonviolent protest. In 1920, when a march started, some people at the back of the march was hit by Indian police. After that, he couldn't help but stop the protest.

In chapter 5, about Gandhi's ashram rules. 1. We always tell the truth. 2. We never kill or hurt any person or animal. 3. We eat only when we are hungry. 4. We do not want many things. 5. We only wear Indian clothes. 6. We are not afraid of anything. 7. We speak Indian languages. 8. Nobody is Untouchable. That's all from me. If you read further in the story, you can know about so-called "The Salt March.

Before I read this book, I knew just a little about Gandhi. However, now I have known about him from birth to death. In the end, Gandhi was murdered, but I strongly believe that his great contribution made India independent.

Martin was a major leader of the movement to gain civil rights for African-Americans. He is also famous for his speech at Lincoln Memorial; "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."
I learned about Martin when I was a high school student. However, because I have learned him and his speech in English, I was able to get a better understanding of his dream.
